What does a successful project look like?

Great Regional City Challenge Projects are thought up and driven by the community so they can NOT be predicted, but these potential project options identify ways in which we can make the region stronger, more active and more inclusive. The following categories are aligned to the Greater Launceston Plan regional priorities.

Creative and Innovative Region:

Building on the untapped skills of young and old, rich and poor; enhancing the arts and cultural scene; investing in innovation, entrepreneurship, partnerships and collaborations. Making use of the knowledge sector and leveraging research and development in agribusiness, manufacturing, health and education. Lifting literacy, academic achievement and vocational skills.

Liveable Region:

Look for projects about where we live, how we play, how we work. How can we make use of existing heritage/environmental assets? How can we enhance the network of parks and alternative transport (paths, cycleways and public transport); activate the waterfront; create a cleaner physical environment (air, water, land use); create key activity hubs; have the best practice urban design? How can we enhance personal happiness, business confidence, family friendliness? How do we reduce loneliness, increase community engagement?

Diverse Economy:

How can we help the economy by attracting more people and businesses in tourism, food and fibre, advanced manufacturing, construction, services to the aged and less able? Look at opportunities in the jobs of the future. Can we better use renewable energy, optimise fuel use, reduce greenhouse emissions? Can we get equitable access to funds and capital?

Diverse Community

A strong economy is a healthy community (think of projects in medical services, mortality, obesity, consumption of local, healthy food), an ethnically diverse community (welcomed, employed, supported), an inclusive community (equity and access regarding gender, sexuality, age, ethnicity, education, beliefs). How can we create an affordable lifestyle in terms of housing, food, transport, energy, education and health costs?

Connected and Networked Region

How do we exploit our gigabit city advantage using NBN connectivity and networks to attract new business and drive productivity? Can we create global links in trade, culture and between people? How can we improve connections and clusters between places, peoples, regions and countries? Can we build on assets such as the airport and port infrastructure?
